You probably know that there are a few things you’ll need to do if you’re interested in protecting your oral health. For instance, you’ll need to brush and floss your teeth daily and visit our dentist once every six months. Still, as you age, there are a number of things to do to keep your teeth strong, including signs you should watch for.
One serious issue you should watch for is gum disease, which can lead to bad breath, lung disease, and heart disease. If you have gum disease, bacteria may be able to enter your bloodstream more easily. If your gums are red, swollen, or sensitive, you could have gum disease.
Another common issue you should watch for is dry mouth. While anyone could have dry mouth, certain medications can actually leave you more susceptible to it. Since you may take more medications as you age, you could be more likely to have dry mouth. If your mouth doesn’t produce enough saliva, it won’t be able to carry bad plaque and bacteria away from your teeth. Dry mouth can also leave you more vulnerable to gum disease as well as tooth decay.
Finally, have you ever been told that you should expect to lose your teeth as you get older? Fortunately, there are a number of things you can do to prevent premature tooth loss. Of course, brushing and flossing are important. You should also visit our team regularly so we can keep your teeth healthy and strong. Following a good diet—one with plenty of vitamin D and calcium—can also be helpful.
