Tooth decay occurs when bacteria exploit an area of tooth enamel, weakening it and establishing a constant presence on the tooth. Any inconsistencies in your daily oral hygiene routine as well as procrastinating treatment at Berryville Dental Associates will embolden the bacteria, allowing the tooth decay to compromise more and more of the tooth.

If the cavity grows too large to be viably treated with a filling, Drs. Kaiser and Malony might recommend restoring the entire tooth enamel layer with a dental crown.

After numbing the tooth with Novocain, your dentists will use a drill to remove the tooth enamel layer. Then, they will create an impression of the abutment and the surrounding teeth. This will be sent to a dental lab where your new crown will be made.

Your dentists will secure a temporary crown that is made from hard plastic over the abutment. While this won’t restore the full function of the tooth, it will protect the abutment while the dental lab technician works to complete your final crown.

A second appointment will be needed when your new crown is ready. The temporary crown will be removed and your new crown will be cemented into place with a strong dental adhesive.

If you have a large, untreated cavity and you live in the Berryville, Virginia, area, you should call 540-955-0270 to seek treatment at Berryville Dental Associates.
